Sustainable Development of the New Millennium
by Ajai Kumar. A
Sustainable development (SD) represents a paradigm shift in how societies approach growth and resource management, emphasizing the necessity of balancing economic, social, and environmental factors. The concept gained prominence in the late 20th century, particularly following the Brundtland Commission’s report in 1987, which defined sustainable development as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. A collaborative strategy including several stakeholders, such as governments, the corporate sector, and civil society organizations, is necessary to achieve sustainable development.
This book comprises five chapters on various aspects of Sustainable development. It covers the topics like historical background of the concept of sustainable development, theories in connection with sustainable development, Sustainable development Goals, and their relevance to today’s world. This book points out the various challenges of achieving sustainable development goals and also analyses the different schemes implemented by the Government of India to achieve sustainable development goals. Utmost care has been taken to make the presentation simple, systematic, and up-to-date so that the students of social science may find this book most reliable and authentic. I hope this book will be useful to all those students who study social science as a major subject. Suggestions for further improvements of this work will be accepted with gratitude
